The EQ Institute was established as a 501(c)3 in 2018 as a foundation with the intention of funding the nonprofit sector serving BIPOC communities. Over the years, we deepened our understanding of the philanthropic landscape, including  the oftentimes oppressive and inequitable practices of funding BIPOC leaders. We found ourselves frustrated with the burden that BIPOC leaders face as a result of racism, systemic inequity, and oppressive power dynamics that allow White spaces to define what competence looks like for BIPOC leaders. We recognize that support for BIPOC leaders must honor their expertise and meet their self-identified needs. As such, The EQ Institute aims to remove barriers for BIPOC leaders to grow in their full authenticity.
